Refrigerate Hemp Seed Oil? Should You or Should You Not

If you are considering adding omega-3 fatty acids to your dietary supplements, hemp seed oil is a great option. It’s not only rich in omega-3 fatty acids but also rich in vitamins and minerals such as zinc, magnesium, and iron all of which are vitally important to your metabolism. So, if you decide to use hemp seed oil, you may be asking yourself, do I need to refrigerate hemp seed oil?

Refrigerate or not refrigerate?

Hemp seed oil typically has a long shelve life so refrigeration is not absolutely necessary. However, if you want your hemp seed oils to remain fresh and last even longer, you should refrigerate it. It is a personal preference and could depend on how much time you travel running your errands prior to going home. You can also store in a place that is cool with low humidity or adding refined beeswax to the hemp seed oil can avoid it from going sour.

What is Hemp Seed Oil?

Hemp seed oil is extracted from the cannabis sativa plant. There are several procedures that the material goes through such as refining, pressing and extracting. It is light yellow or white in color, is a partially solid substance and has a nutty mild flavor but no smell. It consists of 35%-50% oleic acid and 55%-65% linoleic acid. It can go sour if stored for a long period of time at room temperature.

Tips for Preserving Hemp Oil at Home

Storing it in the refrigerator in an air tight container will reserve the quality of the hemp oil and prevent oxidation. Purchasing smaller amounts is a good idea and use them within a few months after you open them.

The shelf life of the hemp oil depends on how well it was stored. If you refrigerated it, it is suggested to use the oil within a couple of months or if you froze it will last longer. Hemp seed oil that has not been opened could last for a couple of years if stored properly.

There are two kinds of hemp seed oils: RSHO (Virgin) and RSHO (Refined)

Refined

The refined RSHO is slightly refined and pre-pressed by the manufacturer. They are usually made from hemp seed that was pasteurized and cleaned from external material prior to pressing. Because they have been refined, they have no traceable amounts of CBD or THC.

Once these oils are exposed to light, they can quickly become sour. It is better to keep them in a dark, cool place to make sure they remain fresh. When refrigerated, refined oils tend to become clearer than virgin oils. The absence of color change indicates that the product wasn’t visible to high pressure during the process of refining and consequently contains fewer natural antioxidants.

Pre-pressed hemp seed oil should never be stored in glass as it will respond with the oil’s acidity and cause it to break down. Rather, keep it in a tight container to avoid oxidation. Do not use plastic as plastic is absorbent.

Virgin

The virgin RSHO is an unprocessed, non-refined seed oil which is extracted from raw seeds with cold pressing procedures. They have a high chlorophyll content so they don’t have to go through heat treatment, so the color will stay green or yellow.

The color represents their quality and freshness. They will become clearer than refined oils once refrigerated because they have higher natural polyphenols and carotenoids that act as natural antioxidants. It will also keep its greenish color when kept refrigerated.

There will be trace amounts of CBD and THC in the cold pressed hemp seed oil as it is not processed. If you are wanting to keep your supplements closer to organic as possible, then this is a perfect option. Virgin RSHO seems to stay fresh longer than refined hemp seed oils as they are not exposed to as much oxygen and light when packed in darker containers. They will also hold more of their natural antioxidants than pre-pressed or cold-pressed oils that are unprotected from the air during processing.
